The new OK Google hot-word detection will let you start a Google Now search from any screen on your device, even the lockscreen. This change rolled out last week, but despite a couple of updates to the app from the Google Play store, many users are still reporting that they aren't seeing this set of options in their Google Now app.

When you spontaneously remember something you need to do at a future time or date while using your device, you can simply say "OK, Google," and then the Google Now interface will be at your service. Ready to add this option? Thanks to reddit user pr01etar1at and AndroidPolice, here's how:

Note: This feature may be limited to Android 4.3 and up for now.

Edit: Some users are reporting that this only works on their 4.4 and up devices, so you may need to update your Android version before you can use this functionality.

                              google-search-interface.png

Step 1: Open Google Now and type "OK Google everywhere" in the search box. You can also say "OK, Google" and then say "OK, Google everywhere," if you're feeling fancy.

Step 2: Tap the menu button on your device and choose Settings > Voice > "Ok Google" Detection.

                               enable-the-hotword-detection.png

Step 3: Check the box next to "From any screen" (and "From lock screen," if you choose).

                                teach-google-how-to-recognize-your-voice-copy-3.png

You'll have to agree to the terms provided by Google, and then teach the app what your voice sounds like by saying "OK, Google" three times.

That's it! Now you can use Google Now when using another app, or just after waking up your device.

Best apps for the World Cup

In the four years since the last World Cup, we've seen significant changes in both Apple's hardware, from first generation iPad to iPad Air, and software, with the ability to easily watch live and catch-up TV almost anywhere. In terms of viewing, it's likely to be the most mobile final ever, despite football's impact being reduced watching on an iPhone or even iPad. With many games starting at 11pm and one at 2am UK time, it might be the sensible option to watch in bed with your iPad close to hand.

Here we round up some of the best World Cup themed apps to get you safely through the next month, heading to the final on Sunday 13 July. It's worth remembering that those apps with Push Notifications switched on will give live updates throughout each game, so if you plan to catch up later best switch these off. Feel free to add your favourite World Cup related iPhone apps in the comments below, we'll likely add them as the tournament progresses.

BBC Sport

BBC Sport - Free - Requires iOS 5.0 or later

BBC Sport, despite the backing of the BBC, performed poorly when it first launched on iTunes, although it has thankfully improved with age, now offering the ability to listen to live commentary even when you close the app. Dedicated World Cup and Commonwealth Games sections have been added, both offering comprehensive coverage, with news, analysis, live scores, match stats and more currently available from Brazil. While the BBC will show 31 games live on television and online, there will be live text commentary on all 64 games available within the app. BBC Sport also offers a decent amount of video, including some memorable moments from previous World Cup finals, along with a World Cup Final.

Caught Offside

Caught Offside - Free (Plus Top In-App Purchases) - Requires iOS 6.0 or later

The well regarded Caught Offside app offers football news, gossip and transfer rumours with the ability to select favourite teams, including those competing in the World Cup in Brazil. It's this focus on football alone that makes Caught Offside an attractive proposition to fans, while a new emphasis on sharing your views could add to the apps appeal. The new Huddle feature allows users to connect with friends and family watching the same game, while you can now make new friends with fans around the world caught up in the action. Caught Offside adds the option to removes ads for £2.99, which helps focus on the football.

Eurosport

Eurosport - Free - Requires iOS 6.0 or later.

Newly updated with "enriched live comment feed for the World Cup,"  Eurosport is generally a good all-rounder when it comes to sports coverage. Part of Yahoo! Sport, Eurosport offers over 100 stories and features every day, along with around 30 videos and the opportunity to comment on content, which occasionally gets heated. The app has a good selection of blog posts and analysis, opinions worth sharing via support for Twitter, Facebook, email and more. We like the fact that Eurosport doesn't take the pomp of the World Cup too seriously, including 'crazy things' you might have missed from the month long event.

FIFA

FIFA - Free - Requires iOS 6.0 or later.

While the official FIFA World Cup app promises wall to wall coverage from Brazil, along with live-match updates for 197 of the world's top leagues, it lacks the insightful commentary you will find elsewhere. This is very much the official version of events, free of controversy. The FIFA app excels in providing exclusive, yet hardly ground breaking interviews and a wonderful selection of photos. The app also offers the endless stats on players, teams and venues, chances to vote for the Man of the Match in each game, win prizes and participate in FIFA themed games, including Fantasy, Dream Team, Your XI and Predictor.

FIFA 14 by EA SPORTS

FIFA 14 by EA SPORTS - Free (Plus Top In-App Purchases) - Requires iOS 5.1.1 or later.

Although FIFA 14 has been around for sometime, this latest update comes with officially licensed World Cup national teams, kits and Adidas Brazuca ball for added authenticity. Although some way from the heat of Brazil, it does add topicality to what is already a fun, if sometimes tricky, game. To add to the World Cup experience, the app promises real-world football results with a built-in Football Club Match Day. FIFA 14 offers a range of Top In-App Purchases, which soon add up should you become carried away with the thrill of chasing gold, although as developers EA Sports point out you can disable these in settings.

Forza Football

Forza Football - Free (Plus Top In-App Purchases) - Requires iOS 6.0 or later.

Another good all-rounder, Forza Football (formerly Live Score Addicts) offers live scores, opinion polls and video highlights for more than 420 football leagues and cups around the world, including the World Cup. Users can edit which leagues and tournaments they wish to follow and set the frequency of live score updates up to every 20 seconds for real addicts, although this will hurt battery life. Companion app Forza 90' adds to the drama and fun by allowing users to share reactions as they happen. Forza Football comes with a selection of 'Top In-App Purchases,' though these are barely essential, consisting of themes and the ability to remove all banner ads.

Follow the Brazil World Cup From Anywhere With These Six Android Apps

The FIFA World Cup in Brazil is imminent. The festival of football kicks off in Sao Paulo on June 12th when the hosts face European side Croatia, with the final being held a month later on July 13th at the world famous Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

A staggering 3.2 billion people are expected to watch at least one match, with more than 1 billion expected to tune in to watch the tournament’s final. If you’re one of those 3.2 billion and you also own an Android phone, what apps do you have available to keep abreast of the latest news and scores from the 64-game event?

FIFA Official App

FIFA’s official app is the obvious choice for followers of the beautiful game. The app is available for free and will bring you all the latest news, scores, photos, and videos regardless of where you are in the world.

fifa app tablet screenshot 640x400 Follow the Brazil World Cup From Anywhere With These Six Android Apps

The benefit of using the official app is the sheer amount of exclusive content, though fans who enjoy more colourful and interactive content may be disappointed. As with many sports apps, users are able to choose up to three of their favourite teams whose content will be given priority each time you open the app.

In addition to its World Cup coverage, the app also delivers news and scores from an impressive 102 different leagues around the world – meaning that even once the dust has settled on this summer’s showpiece event, you’ll still be able to get good use from it.

The FIFA Weekly Magazine App

Another free official FIFA app, the magazine focuses more on long-form content than short news pieces and match information. Released every Friday, the magazine is released in both digital and paper form and brands itself as offering “the best in-depth analysis, interviews, commentaries, debates and much more”. The app also includes a fun weekly World Cup quiz, with a range of prizes up for grabs.

fifa magazine image 640x373 Follow the Brazil World Cup From Anywhere With These Six Android Apps

The latest edition will automatically download to your device, and the app will allow you to browse six months’ worth of back issues.

The usability of the app is excellent; it allows you to bookmark your favourite content for easy retrieval later, while also providing the ability to share articles with friends via email, Twitter, and Facebook.

World Cup 2014 Brazil

World Cup 2014 Brazil is a full-featured app developed by Jalvasco Apps. Although it lacks some of the polish of official FIFA apps, it more than makes up for it with its ease of use and range of data.

In addition to fully customisable tracking features, complete match schedules, and in-play details, the app also stands out thanks to a few unique offerings. Firstly, the app provides full and detailed analysis of all previous World Cup finals – perfect for settling factual disputes with friends whilst also giving new fans of the sport some context for this year’s tournament.

wc 2014 app v3 611x500 Follow the Brazil World Cup From Anywhere With These Six Android Apps

Secondly, the app includes sections dedicated to the controversial upcoming World Cups in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. Finally the app also works offline, meaning that if you have no connection you’ll still be able to access scores and news rather than getting presented with a failed connection screen and being blocked from viewing content.

The app is available for free.

ESPN FC Football and World Cup

Like both the Windows version and their official website, the app offers a constant stream of breaking news and in-depth analysis. Featuring several of the world’s most respected football journalists (including Gabriele Marcotti, Sid Lowe, Raphael Honigstein and Tim Vickery), the app is a must-have for users who want quality journalism in conjunction with their daily fix of stats and scores.

The app will even continue to be relevant after the World Cup by featuring engaging content from competitions as diverse as the UEFA Champions League in Europe to the CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana in South America.

Goal 2014

Are you one of the lucky 2.5 million ticket holders? If so, this is the app for you. Alongside an aggregated stream of news and content from publishers around the world, the app also offers photos, information, and maps from all twelve of the host cities – helping you to make sure that you arrive at the stadiums easily and with plenty of time to spare.

goal tv app 640x207 Follow the Brazil World Cup From Anywhere With These Six Android Apps

If you’re not one of the 2.5 million ticket holders you can still take advantage of the app – it is the only one on our list which offers highlights of the matches directly on your device.

Football Team Bus Battle 2014

Can’t manage to wait until June 12th for the action to get started? Try this free game to help get you in the mood. Granted, it won’t keep you up-to-date with the World Cup’s latest bulletins, but it will help you waste away these final few days of waiting.

The aim of the game is to hunt down rival nation’s team buses and ram them off the road, all the while dodging traffic and collecting loose footballs for extra bonus points. All thirty two competing nations and their anthems are included, making this an addictive World Cup appetiser.

Best free iPad games: Smash Hit

Looking for the best free iPad games? We've got 12 brilliant free gaming apps for iOS gamers to choose from, covering everything from puzzle games and RPGs to sports and racing games and deck-building card games. iPad gamers will find plenty to enjoy here without spending any money at all.

Before we get started, however, be warned that free games aren't always the bargain they first appear, you should always ask yourself one question: "If this app is free, how are the developers planning to make their money?"

Free (or 'freemium') iOS games, more than any others, tend to be passionately fond of in-app payments (IAPs). It's particularly worth making sure that children are told about the dangers and expenses of in-app purchases if you're setting them up to play freemium games, and we'd recommend using parental controls to avoid an unexpected and unpleasant surprise when you get your credit-card statement. If IAPs aren't the planned source of revenue, the app may be stuffed with adverts; that was Flappy Bird's business model.

Despite these caveats, however, there are some excellent free games out there for keen iPad games on a budget - all of the iPad games in this article are free to download and can be enjoyed without spending anything, even if a couple feature (cheap) unlocks or premium versions we'd probably recommend if you can afford it. Let's get on to the games reviews; you'll notice that many of them now include video reviews.

The best free games for iPad

1. dEXTRIS - Free

Addictive in the classic 'just one more go' sort of way, striking-looking if not classically handsome, expertly honed and unapologetically simple, dEXTRIS tasks you with... making two coloured squares follow a never-ending corridor without bumping into the jagged shapes in your way. There are only four possible 'moves': leave the squares to sit in the middle (press nothing); send them both to the left or to the right (press on either the left or right side of the screen); or split them, as in the screen image below (press with both thumbs at once). And then things simply get faster and faster.

There are in-game adverts, which are mildly annoying, but the gameplay is strong and there's a lovely old-fashioned feel to the way you'll find yourself chasing high scores; in no other iOS game have I found myself so obsessed with the rankings on Game Center.

dEXTRIS free iPad game review

2. Only One - Free

This is such fun.

Only One is a silly fighting game with simple, retro graphics, entirely set on top of a circular plateau. Villains continuously spawn and attack you, and it's your job to slash them to death with your sword or push them over the edge. We recommend the one-off in-app payment - Ultimate Power - that gives you a permanent power multiplier and unlocks all the abilities, but you can have a great laugh without spending anything.

Only One free iPad game review

3. Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer - Free

A card game now, for a change of pace.

To the casual player Ascension seems not dissimilar to Magic: The Gathering (although MTG fans will harangue me for saying so, I'm sure) - you build and play from a deck of cards, each of which depicts a warrior, magician or relic of some kind, and use these to slay monsters and acquire both points and further cards. The unusual side is that all players start with an identical deck, adding to this within the game itself.

It's all weirdly addictive, once you play a few times, and while some reviewers have criticised the mostly rough-seeming art style, we find it all rather beautiful. (Update: very sadly, this app is going to be killed off and replaced in the near future, and it's uncertain whether you'll be able to transfer any IAPs you've bought in this app to the new one. This is still a great game, but at this point I would advise caution when it comes to buying extra content.)

4. Smash Hit - Free

This first-person shooter - which has more than a hint of the classic nerve-fraying endless runner about it - offers no enemies to shoot except the pleasingly destructible glass and stone obstacles in front of you, which you need to shatter before you run straight into them.

The graphics are a triumph, as is the satisfying gunplay: your bullets (more like oversized marbles) describe looping trajectories and make a lovely racket when they strike home. Simple and fun.

5. Middle Manager of Justice - Free

Middle Manager of Justice is a superhero-themed base-building game in which the heroes are preening, stereotype-spouting goons who divide their time between punching thugs, watching TV and manning call centres. You're abstractly their middle manager, working out where best to spend the squad's pitiful income while assigning your heroes to dole out fist-based justice to assorted evil-doers. Utterly shallow, but the game is aware of that - which is why it works so well. Alec Meer

Middle Manager Of Justice review

6. Real Racing 3 - Free

The Real Racing series is deservedly idolised - Real Racing 2 is a paid-for title filed in the sports section of our roundup of the best games for iPad and iPhone. But Real Racing 3 - another beautiful and accomplished racing game - follows a different racing line, offering itself for free while touting for income via in-app purchases. The game is gorgeous, even though there is quite a lot of pressure to spend real-world money. David Price

Real Racing 3 iPad game review

7. Temple Run 2 - Free

Like the ubiquitous first game, Temple Run 2 is a simple 'auto-runner' in which you're forced to make snap reactions as your fleeing Indiana Jones-alike is propelled ever onwards at increasing speed: striving to dodge walls, fatal drops, spikey boulders and an enormous pursuing monkey-monster. Death is inevitable, as is having 'just one more go.' Alec Meer

Temple Run 2

8. Letterpress - Free

Letterpress's approach is unique - a cunning blend of Boggle and Strategery - and alarmingly addictive. On your turn, you can use any of the letters in a five-by-five grid to build a word. After you submit your word, the tiles you used turn blue. Then it's your opponent's turn, with the tiles he or she uses turning pink. Once all the tiles have been used, the game ends, and whichever player turned more tiles to his or her colour emerges the victor.

Fans of word games won't be disappointed. Lex Friedman

Letterpress review

9. New Star Soccer - Free

In this neat, free footie sim, you're a striker aiming for the big time. On the pitch, this means scoring wonder goals: pull back to set power and direction, then tap to set the curve. Off the pitch, it means training, dressing for success and decking out your house in tacky bling.

It's a testament to the brilliant gameplay that even football haters will get something out of this. Alan Martin

10. Triple Town - Free

Triple Town's premise is simple: you're building a town on a 6 x 6 grid filled with bushes and trees. You do this by grouping items into threes: three trees become a hut, three huts become a house and so on. Trap the game's 'enemies' - adorable bears - and they turn into grave stones, three of these make a church.

The whole thing is fresh, addictive and challenging: if you think you’ve seen everything Match 3 has to offer, you're in for a surprise.

Triple Town iPad game review

11. Whale Trail - Free

It might not have the deepest replay value, but since going free-to-play Whale Trail's charms have been harder to resist. It's a one-button game, with a mechanic that's close to Tiny Wings in reverse: tap the screen to fly upwards, release to swoop down. You need to avoid the clouds and collect fuel of some kind.

It looks delightful, the gamplay is well-crafted and there's a wicked soundtrack too.

Whale Trail free iPad game review

12. Dumb Ways To Die - Free

At the start of this article we encouraged players of free iPad games to consider the question: "How are the developers making their money?" But there is one exception. Some games are created by non-profit, publicly funded or charitable organisations, and can be given away for free without any strings attached (except well-intentioned ideological ones, probably).

Dumb Ways To Die was commissioned by Metro Trains Melbourne in order to raise awareness of railway safety, and a proportion of its macabre puzzles involve helping the characters avoid being sliced in half by trains. But the makers didn't feel the need to stick too closely to the brief, and the theme meanders off all over the place. It's brilliant.

It's fun, and funny, and fast - each puzzle lasts just a few seconds, before you're whisked off to the next. There's not enormous depth, but it's definitely worth a go.

Music is ingrained so deep into the Apple ecosystem that it’s natural for iPhone and iPod users to be major audiophiles. In fact, the journey began with the iPod and the iTunes after all. With so many streaming apps including those of iTunes Radio, Spotify, Pandora and more, you can access (stream) music (almost free) from anywhere.

But what if you want to download free music (legally) and have it on your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch? How to get free music on the iPhone is something a lot of people actively look for. Understandably, there’s no simple way to do this but there are plenty of options. Here’s what I’m talking about:

#1. iTunes Single of the Week

One of the safest and the easiest ways to download free music on your iPhone is to rely on Apple’s iTunes Single of the Week. Every week, curators at Apple release one free single track (either out of an album or just as a single). All you need to do is open the iTunes app and pick the free download.

#2. FMA

FMA iPhone App IconFree Music Archive is popular for its curated collection of free music (that keeps growing). You won’t find a Nicki Minaj or Nirvana here but the music you’ll discover here can be as addictive. In some cases, better. What is special about FMA is that it has a standalone iPhone app that can get you direct access to all the tracks from the archive. You can directly download or just stream to your iPhone.

#3. Downloader for SoundCloud

Downloader for SoundCloud iPhone App IconSoundCloud began as a place to share your tiny random recordings but has grown, over the years, into a huge catalog of indie music. There are some awesome artists establishing a strong footing in the music industry’s landscape through SoundCloud. There is an official app but it doesn’t let you download tracks. For that, there’s Downloader for SoundCloud which works like a charm. The downloader doesn’t stop at that. You can create playlists too (which kind of sounds redundant given that you can create playlists everywhere). The app is free but there are some limitations that can be unlocked by upgrading to the Pro version (in-app purchase: $1.99).

#4. FinalTube Free

FinalTube Free iPhone App IconYou cannot download videos from video-serving websites like YouTube but it is okay to cache the video locally (cache is what a browser does too). FinalTube makes use of this capability to help you stream songs even when you’re actually offline. So in many ways, this is not exactly a “free music download” solution but it works somewhat close to that theme. FinalTube is especially useful when most of your music-listening is done over YouTube.

#5. MyMP3

MyMP3 iPhone App IconWe haven’t had a chance to test MyMP3 and the reviews are both good and bad. But the description says that MyMP3 converts videos to mp3 files. Most users have pointed out that this feature works pretty good. MyMP3 can convert any video (including the ones streaming or the ones in your camera roll) to mp3. It also features a built-in music player. You might have to resort to the developer’s MyVid to get those videos in the first place.

Other Ways to Download Free Music on Your iPhone/iPod Touch

If we’re talking about free music on the iPhone, that has a very limited scope. But the web has a plethora of sources where you can get free music, legally. Most of it is by indie artists and bands that are just coming up. You don’t get to see a lot of popular music in the free circuit. But, in cases like iMesh with its 15-million strong audio library or Last.fm's free music collection that runs to about 25 pages (as on last count), you do find – occasionally – popular tracks. There are also other websites like Noisetrade where you get high-quality free music.

In these cases, what you can do to get these tracks onto your iPhone is to use a suitable download manager like MyMedia Download Manager (which is free, by the way). The app comes with a built-in browser so you can browse through the downloadable tracks of iMesh or Last.fm or Noisetrade through MyMedia Download Manager. The app lets you easily, quickly and seamlessly download mp3 files directly to your iPhone.

Another top-rated online MP3 music downloader to let you enjoy any music on iPhone or iPod touch is Leemsoft MP3 Downloader for Mac ($19.95). It's a Mac OS X streaming music download tool to enable you search and download any songs from online music sites such as YouTube, Google, Yahoo, Pandora, Last.FM, Myspace, etc. It can automatically transfer downloaded MP3 tracks to DropBox which makes it freely for you to play back the songs on your iPhone/iPod touch.

Love Pandora, but not in your browser? Here are the best Mac apps for the job – regardless of whether you’re a Pandora One subscriber.

Mac users tend to prefer native apps to web ones, and features like keyboard shortcuts and menubar integration just make sense when you’re talking about music. Pandora offers an official desktop app for paying users, but it’s not the only option out there. Whether you’d rather not pay for a subscription, or are wondering if there’s something better out there, here are the best Pandora apps for Mac.

None of these apps require a Pandora One account, and none are mere wrappers for Pandora’s web interface.

Note: Pandora only works in the United States, New Zealand and Australia.

Hermes (free): Just The Music

Pandora’s simplicity is what makes it work. Open the website, pick a station, listen to music. Hermes brings this to the Mac.

pandora mac hermes The Best Mac Apps For Listening To Pandora

The main window shows you album art and controls. A sidebar shows you your stations – and allows you to create new ones. You can also, optionally, use Hermes from the menubar. The controls for this couldn’t be simpler:

pandora mac hermes menubar The Best Mac Apps For Listening To Pandora

Hermes offers full support for your Mac’s media control keys (assuming you’ve stopped iTunes from holding those keys hostage), and also offers Growl integration for notifications. It’s the app I’d suggest trying first.

Bandito (free): Web Meets Menubar

Want something that looks more like the web version? Fair enough. Bandito is a menubar app for Pandora:

pandora mac bandito The Best Mac Apps For Listening To Pandora

You’ll find all your stations here, and a familiar look. You won’t find support for your Mac’s media keys – the Mac App Store sandboxing prevents that – but you can set whatever keyboard shortcuts you want.

Pandorita (free): Review Your Playlist

Pandorita is worth a look. It’s main advantage is a visible playlist, which you can use to review recent songs:

pandora mac pandorita The Best Mac Apps For Listening To Pandora

Your Mac’s media keys are supported, as are Growl notifications. Some of the interface elements could be improved and it won’t win any awards for its looks but overall it’s a nice app.

PandaBar ($5): Notifications & Last.FM

PandaBar might be worth the five dollars if certain features matter to you.

pandora mac pandabar The Best Mac Apps For Listening To Pandora

This is the only app on this list to natively support the OS X Notification Center, without the need for Growl, as well as Last.fm scrobbling. The app supports your Mac’s media keys, and even the Apple Remote. If any of these things are worth five dollars to you, PandaBar might be worth it.

Pianobar (free): Command Line Radio

Are you old school at heart? Go GUI-less. Pianobar is a command line tool you can use to listen to, and control, Pandora entirely from your Mac’s Terminal.

pandora mac pianobar The Best Mac Apps For Listening To Pandora

This program is actually what powers Hermes, but command line junkies will no doubt prefer the pure version. A variety of keyboard shortcuts (you can see a list by typing “?”) let you skip, like and read about why a given track is included in your playlist.

Browser Extensions

Not sure about these desktop apps? There are a few browser extensions that might be worth checking out, that offer similar features. Unified Media Keys for Chrome, for example, lets you control Pandora using your Mac's media keys.

7 Tools to Make Android Compatible with Apple Gear

Although Apple has always intended for their products to form a closed ecosystem, a lot of people have Android phones and want to use them with Apple products. From streaming video to syncing music and contacts, these apps make it a breeze.

Transfer Files Between Mac and Android: AirDroid

AirDroid is a free service that allows you to move files to and from your phone from your web browser. You can even send and receive text messages from your computer.

To get started, just download AirDroid 2 (free) from the Google Play Store and go to airdroid.com on your Mac. Sign up for an account (you can use your Google, Facebook, or Twitter accounts, or your e-mail address), and sign in on your phone using the same method.

To start transferring files, log into airdroid.com and click Start AirDroid at the top of the window from your Mac. Sign in and you’ll see the AirDroid online desktop, where you can send and receive messages, look at call logs, and transfer files. It’s as easy as dragging and dropping the things you want on your phone into the box on the right side of the screen.

Get Your Music Anywhere: Google Music

Because a lot of the syncing done between Apple devices happens via iTunes, it’s really easy to get your music from your computer to your iPhone. It’s more difficult when you have an Android phone, but it can certainly be done.

In addition to a number of other apps that sync iTunes with Android, Google has made it possible to sync through Google Play Music. You can upload your entire music collection—up to 20,000 songs—to their servers, where you can easily access and download them on your Android.

To get started, go to Google Play Music and sign in (assuming the service is available in your country). Once you’ve signed into, you’ll see a button on the top-right side of the screen that says “Upload music.” Click this button, and you’ll be prompted to download the Google Play Music Manager.

Once it’s downloaded, you’ll be prompted to sign in to Chrome, but you don’t have to—just close the new tab and return to Google Play Music. To choose the folders you’d like to Sync, click the cog in the top-right corner and then Settings. Under “Music From This Computer,” you’ll be able to choose the folders that you’d like to sync to Google Play Music. Click “Add or remove folders” and choose the folder(s) where you keep all of your music (usually “iTunes” or “Amazon Mp3″). Now, whenever you add music to one of these folders, it will be automatically uploaded to Google Play Music, ready to be accessed on your phone!

When I set up the sync, my music didn’t upload automatically, and I needed to start the upload manually. To do this, click on “Add music” in the top-right corner. Drag your Music folder (and any other folders where you have music) into the Chrome tab and the upload will start.

To access music on your phone, you’ll need to download the Google Play Music app (free). Open it and tap on My Library—you’ll see all of the music that you uploaded from your computer. Navigate to the album that you want to download to your phone, tap the pushpin icon, and it’ll start downloading. You can also just play the album without downloading it first – it will stream live straight to your phone.

Stream to AirPlay Devices: AllCast

If you’re looking to stream music, photos, or video to your AirPlay device, AllCast (free) has you covered. You can easily stream to Apple TV, another AirPlay-enabled device, and even stream directly to Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic smart TVs.

To get it set up, just download AllCast from the Google Play Store and open it up—it will automatically detect nearby devices that you can stream to. Tap the device you want, and you’ll see a screen that brings up all of the photos and videos on your device. Select the one you want to stream to your TV, and watch it appear.

There’s a free version of AllCast with a 1-minute limit on streaming, and a paid version that unlocks the full potential. Try out the free version to make sure it works before paying for the premium one.

Unfortunately, AllCast only streams things that are stored locally on your phone. If you’re going to be streaming things from YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, or a local media server, try out AppleTV AirPlay Meia Player, an app that will stream audio or video to your AppleTV.

In researching options for streaming, it’s clear that there’s a lot of disagreement. Some people find AllCast best, others like iMediaShare, and some have the best luck with PlayTo. You should definitely try the free version of an app or two to make sure it works how you want it to before committing to a premium version.

Contacts, Calendars, Tasks, and Notes: SmoothSync and iNotes

Keeping all of these things in sync can be tough—Apple never really intended for iCloud to be accessed on non-Apple devices. But a number of apps have been developed that will help you keep everything organized.

Browsing History, Bookmarks, and Settings: Chrome

Chrome is a well-liked browser, and one of the reasons we like it so much is that you can easily sync information from your browser between devices. If you use Chrome on your Mac, you can sync your bookmarks, open tabs, and other items to your Android phone, a Windows PC or even an iPad running Chrome for iOS.

To start the sync process, you’ll have to log in to Chrome with your Google account. Open the Chrome settings menu (in the top-right corner of the window) from your Mac and click Sign in to Chrome – you’ll need a Google account for this.

Google will sync your apps, autofill information, bookmarks, extensions, history, passwords, settings, themes and open tabs. If you want a bit more control over what’s synced — whether for privacy, data, or work reasons — you can click Choose what to sync and select only the items you’d like synced.

To get this information on your Android (or any other device running Chrome), just sign into Chrome with the same Google account and watch it start syncing!

Sync Passwords: LastPass, KeePass, or 1Password

We’ve sung the praises of LastPass a number of times before, and I’ll do it again here. LastPass allows you to sync your passwords for websites and apps across devices. To sync to your mobile device, you’ll need the premium version, which is well worth the $12 per year.

There are two easy options for accessing LastPass on your Android: the standalone combination password-manager-browser app (free), and the Dolphin browser extension (free), which is used with the Dolphin browser (much like you use the extension with your desktop browser). If you don’t already use Dolphin, I recommend downloading it. Once you’ve signed into the LastPass app or logged in from the Dolphin extension, your passwords will be synced and ready to go.

Of course, there are some other great options for managing your passwords, too — KeePassX for Mac is completely free, and there’s an Android client that will let you access all of your data from your phone. 1Password is another secure option, and can be used with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.

Conclusion

Regardless of Apple’s intentions, a lot of people have a Mac and an Android phone. If you’re a member of this group, you can use the apps above to wirelessly transfer files; get your music anywhere; stream to AirPlay devices; sync your contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes; and create a seamless browsing experience between your Android and your Mac. Don’t be held back by using two different systems — use these apps to enjoy mobile freedom!

Apple’s iOS ships with Safari, which is an excellent browser that renders webpages fast and generally provides for a good web surfing experience. It’s bolstered by tie-ins with Apple’s iCloud, making it easy to sync bookmarks between your computer and iPhone or iPad. The core of any good app is reliability and Apple’s Safari web browser has had bouts with instability since release of iOS 7. While recent updates have improved things and that’s expected to continue with iOS 8, it has left some folks looking at their options. Here’s a look at the best alternative browser apps for iPhone and iPad.

Alternative browsers to Safari

Google Chrome

Next to Safari, Google’s Chrome browser for iOS is the most popular web browser on iPhone and iPad. There’s no magic behind its position in the download charts, Chrome is good and makes for a great alternative to Safari. For one, it benefits from having a sibling browser that’s pretty popular on desktop computers, both PC and Mac. That means you are one sign in away from having immediate access to all your favorites and bookmarks.

One unique feature of Chrome is its ability to preload webpages. As wireless carriers increasingly push data caps, less data use can help reign in your wireless bill. Google says by using optimizations, loading images to their servers can result in a reduction of data up to 50 percent.

Voice Search Chrome

The latest version also includes voice search. When you browse to google.com, a microphone appears, letting you ask Google. Voice search is much quicker, especially if you have a longer, complex search query.

For those looking to keep their browsing private, Chrome’s Incognito mode lets you surf without saving your browsing history. All you have to do is close the browser tab and that page is literally history.

Other notable features include built-in translation, support for unlimited tabs and an app that consistently benefits from a steady stream of updates to address any lingering stability issues.

As for what you can expect to pay for a world-class mobile web browser? How about free?

Mercury

You might not realize what you’ve been missing until you’ve tried Mercury, available in both free and paid ($0.99) versions. The most prominent feature is support for extensions, all built-in to the app. You enable a host of options from ad block to a nifty screen shot utility. If QR codes are you thing, that’s built in also, letting you scan’em and surf to them. Here’s a look at all of the extensions offered:

  • Ad block
  • Instapaper
  • LastPass
  • Pinboard
  • Pocket
  • QR Scanner
  • Reader
  • Screenshot
  • Search Menu
  • Translate
  • Wikipedia

Mercury extensions

The first impressions of Mercury are that it’s a fast browser with a clean looking interface, but that’s only half the story. If you take the time to delve into the settings, you’d find some a treasure trove of functionality. You can heavily customize your browsing experience. The multi-touch settings let you change up to 10 gestures. For example, a ‘two finger swipe’ up can be set to view the previous page. The options are endless. There are different tab styles, address bar styles and you can turn the scroll bar on/off.

Mercury screenshots

Like most browsers, there is a private browsing option. Mercury goes one step further when it comes to privacy. You can set a passcode. If you leave the app without quitting, a passcode is still required to restart your browsing sesson. Privacy buffs should love this option.

Mercury also lets you download all sorts of files and manage them using a powerful built-in File Manager. It all worked as advertised and gave Mercury the feel of a desktop browser. Speaking of which, you can change the user agent if you need to spoof a website which is forcing a poor mobile view. Other options let you ‘hide’ the options bar, creating a more immersive view.

Download manager

If you seek raw browsing power and endless options, Mercury for iOS is a good place to start.

Puffin

Offered in both free and pad versions, Puffin will largely appeal to those who must view Flash content on the web. If you enjoy playing flash games or watching flash based content online, Puffin offers Flash support through their servers, which they call Flash in the cloud. One of the more interesting options with Puffin are the overlay options for a mouse (pointer) and game controllers. For gamers, the added functionality of having arrow keys is worth the price of admission.

Gamepad Puffin

The iPhone has never supported Flash and it never will. If you need a browser that has Flash capabilities, Puffin is your best option. The free version lets you access content during off-peak times (8:00 am to 4pm).

For traditional browsing, Puffin claims their Javascript engine is faster than Safari by up to 550%. In our testing, this browser was adept at rendered webpages quickly.

If you are in the market for a fast browser that plays nice with Adobe Flash, check out the free version of Puffin. The Pro version will set you back $3.99, a small price to pay for everything the Internet has to offer.

Opera Coast

There only so many ways to design a browser window, but Opera has managed to think out of the box with Opera Coast. It’s a fresh, modern UI and I’m not simply talking about iOS 7 iconography or minimalist design. This browser feels alive, providing users with a ‘head start’ to the web, aligning popular websites with colorful favicons across the screen. You can tap on a favorite or pull down to start searching the web using Google.

Opera browser

As you type, icons of related sites start appear neatly in a row atop the screen. There are also previews of popular searches. A search of ‘NHL’ brought up an icon representing the main site along with Standings and Scores. By tapping and holding the icon, it was easy to add to my favorites.

Some browsers are focused on having the most features and that’s perfectly fine. Opera Coast seems content with providing a great, fun web browsing experience. No more, no less. The app feels alive to the touch, an experience rich with animations that delight. As you pull down to search, the background image elegantly inherits a gaussian blur, letting you focus on your search. Navigating around was fast, fluid and didn’t feel like work.

Opera Coast is simple, beautiful, fast and fun. Take it for a spin around the block, but don’t be surprised if it makes you forget your old, stodgy browser.

Dolphin

A mainstay amongst Android users, Dolphin is a very capable browser. A unique gesture feature lets you use your finger to handle everything from navigation to viewing a favorite. For example, you can draw the letter G to visit Google or A for Amazon. Dolphin gestures are completely customizable.

Dolphin gestures

Dolphin keeps its interface free of distractions by letting users swipe left to access bookmarks or right to view open tabs. Bookmarks can be synced across devices, provided you sign in to Dolphin Connect. Viewing tabs in a list can be a refreshing break from the 3D layout in Safari.

The browser itself is free, but a $0.99 in-app purchase will give you access to Dolphin Sonar. Besides being a great name, it lets you use your voice to search the Internet, share on social networks, bookmark websites and more.

While deserving to be on any list of iOS browser alternatives, you should note that Dolphin has not been updated since October, 2013. Its interface could stand to be refreshed.

Safari is a great browser and its integration with iCloud makes it a fantastic option for most users. For those looking for ad-block, support for Flash or a feature not included with Safari, you should be happy to know there are a number of great alternatives. Most of the alternative browsers listed above have free versions. Give them a try and ultimately, see what works best for you. Do you have a favorite?
