The Internet has been abuzz with all things Amazon. Specifically, all things Kindle. Amazon recently had a giant media event where they went wild and crazy announcing all kinds of new hardware. If you did not follow the constant stream of live-blogs that were all over the Internet, here’s a handy summary of the big announcements in one quick article.

The first announcement, and the one that has most people excited, is the revealing of the Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE. It will run $499 and feature 32GB of storage space. As far as data is concerned, you can get 150 MB of data through AT&T and 20GB of Amazon’s cloud storage for $50 a year. Amazon made it clear that they are coming after Apple’s iPad, which starts at the same price.

Amazon also announced the Kindle Fire HD. These models come in two different sizes. The first one features a seven-inch screen and 16GB of memory and will cost $199. Amazon will ship the seven-inch model on September 14. The second model is 8.9-inches and will have the same amount of memory. This model will set you back $299. This one will ship sometime in November.

Amazon also announced the Kindle Paperwhite. It’s a smaller, sleeker version of the regular Kindle. It offers more contrast, more pixels per inch and it has a new capacitive touch screen. It will ship on October 1st and cost $179 with 3G and $119 without.

Amazon also announced a new parental control feature called FreeTime. It is coming to Fire HD and offers parents an incredible amount of control over how their kids use the device. It allows parents to set all kinds of time limits and fine-tune how the time limits are in place. For example, they can set it so their child can only watch 30 minutes of video per day, but they can read as many books as they want.

Overall, Amazon came over very strong for this event. They are bringing some fantastic hardware to the market that everyone needs to keep an eye on.

Kindle paperwhite

This week was filled with a smattering of mobile and tablet news, as major hardware providers scramble to keep their products in the limelight in anticipation of Apple's September 12 event. Today, Amazon's Jeff Bezos took the stage to announce not one, but seven total upgrades or new products in the company's already successful Kindle family.

The Basic Kindle Is Now $69

OK, so maybe it doesn't have all the bells of its Fire cousin, but the traditional e-reader Kindle is no slouch. Last year, Amazon introduced a super-affordable $79 version to the delight of book lovers everywhere. The new Kindle is just $69, and receives some minor improvements like new fonts, crisper text, and speedier page turns. The new Kindle ships on September 14.

Read Your Kindle In Low-Light With Paperwhite

So, it turns out the rumors are true: Amazon's new e-reader will brighten up the device's screen, thanks to a new, patented "light guide." While reading books on a bright LCD screen can sometimes  lead to eye strain, the Kindle Paperwhite front-lit system seems to put off a more subtle, ambient glow. The Paperwhite model gets eight weeks of battery life, 62-percent more pixels (212ppi), and a capacitive touch screen. Both the wi-fi ($119) and 3G ($179) models will ship October 1.

Kindle Fire Gets Updates, HD Models

Bezos made a point during today's event to mention the Kindle Fire tablet as Amazon's number-one selling item. So, it's no surprise the company is challenging the tablet market full-bore. The Kindle Fire will feature 40-percent faster performance with a new processor, twice the amount of RAM, and also includes a longer-lasting battery. The standard Fire model ships on September 14 for $159.

But there's even more additions to the Fire line-up. Amazon made it abundantly clear it plans to take on competitor Apple with higher-end tablets. The new Kindle Fire HD comes in two screen-size varieties: 7-inch and 8.9-inch. Both models feature hi-res (1920X1200) displays, a laminated touch sensor for less glare, and a Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 processor.

Bezos claims dual-band wi-fi antennas and MIMO functionality mean Kindle Fire HD runs 41-percent faster than the new iPad. The Fire HD also features two Dolby Digital speakers, and HDMI out. The 7-inch model ships September 14 for $199. The 8.9-inch model ships November 20 for $299.

The Kindle Fire HD Goes 4G LTE

Last, but certainly not least, Amazon also announced the Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE -- now that's a long name. Amazon is framing its highest-end tablet as a direct competitor to the new iPad. The device features 32GB of storage, and the super-affordable Amazon 4G LTE Package. Priced at $49.99/year, the package includes 250MB/month of data, 20GB of Amazon Cloud storage, and a $10 Amazon Appstore credit. Kindle Fire HD 4G ships for $499 on November 20.

Whispersync For Games

One of the more interesting tidbits during the Amazon event was Whispersync for Games. Kindle will now sync your scores, saves, etc. across its devices; no need to start your games all over when switching to a new device.

Another Whispersync -- for voice -- will sync audiobooks with printed books. Essentially, the Kindle reads to you as you're reading the words. Kind of weird, but it sounds interesting.

A huge show for Amazon, and the price of that long-winded Kindle Fire HD with 4G looks awfully tempting. What do you think?

gaming tabletMobile gaming is kind of a big deal. Most games available for tablets aren’t as long as the best titles for handheld consoles, but some are just as deep in both story and mechanics. As for selection, well, there’s just no way Nintendo or Sony can compete with the iOS and Android app stores.

Even some hardcore gamers are now turning to tablets as an alternative to handheld consoles. Which begs the question – if you care about gaming, what tablet is the best? Is there a major difference between the competitors, or are they all about the same?

The Three Best Choices

Now that I’ve provided an overview, let’s get down to the specifics – the three best gaming tablets on the market today.

Apple iPad 3 aka The New iPad

best tablet for gaming

The iOS environment is a great boon to the tablet gamer. Game usually come out for iOS first, and Android later. Games also tend to run better on the iPad because the developers only have to code for a few devices with extremely similar hardware.

With that said, don’t discount the hardware. The display on the iPad 3 is amazing. It’s crisp, offers excellent color reproduction and features deep black levels. This is enhanced by the A5X, which features the most powerful GPU on any tablet sold today.

Sony Tablet S

best gaming tablet

Like some other Sony devices, the Tablet S is Playstation Certified. This means it will be able to run Playstation Mobile games, giving gamers another source of high-quality titles. You’ll be able to play games like WipEout and DYAD, among many others. You can even play them by pairing the tablet with a wireless PS3 controller.

The tablet also features a “TruBlack” display. It provides excellent black levels, which results in good image quality.

The main downside is the use of the older Tegra 2 SoC. This hampers performance in theory, though the tablet should be able to handle modern Android titles.

Google Nexus 7

gaming tablet

It’s hard to beat the value presented by the Nexus 7. For $200 you can have a tablet with the same Tegra 3 SoC found in other larger, more expensive tablets. It provides the same performance at a much lower price.

Another benefit is the display. Color reproduction and black levels are not the best, but it does offer a 216 pixels per inch, which not far off what Apple offers with its Retina display.

Some gamers may be turned off by the size. A 7” tablet is quite a bit smaller than a 10” one. This can also be a boon, however, because the tablet is lighter and easier to handle. That makes the tablet easier to use for long periods of time.

Conclusion

Here’s the summary checklist for buying a gaming tablet.

  • Check the performance of the SoC.
  • Consider display quality.
  • Research game selection and peripheral compatibility.
  • Look at size and weight (lighter, thinner tablets are often more comfortable).

If you remember these four points before you make your purchase you should be happy with the product. Don’t worry much about interface customizations, camera quality or even audio quality (you can always wear earplugs, and probably will if you game outside your home).

kindle fireAmazon’s latest entry into the eBook reader market is a step up from the e-ink devices that traditionally bear the name “Kindle”. The Kindle Fire is a 7 inch tablet running a customized version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread and enables users to access the Kindle store, download media provided by Amazon Prime and surf the web, check emails and download apps, much as you would with any other Android slate.

If you’re familiar with the Android system then setting up your Kindle Fire should be pretty straightforward. However if this is all new to you or you have received a Kindle Fire as a gift and it has the sender’s Amazon details (the company adds these details when they dispatch their eBook reader devices) then you’ll need to know how to get started with this great tablet device.

Connecting To Wireless Networks

When you first switch on a new Amazon Kindle Fire, the device will attempt to get you connected to a local wireless network. This is to enable you to connect to your Amazon account and start using the Kindle store.

kindle fire

Any wireless networks in the vicinity will be displayed, so all you will need to do is tap the preferred hotspot and add the password or key string. You can use the Show password box to check what you’re entering is correct, useful for those complicated encrypted strings. Click Connect when you’re done.

Adding Your Amazon Account

You will then be prompted to enter your Amazon password, just below where your username is displayed. If the Kindle was bought by a friend or relative as a gift you will find that the device is registered to them, so you will need to deregister the device before you can add your own credentials.

setting up kindle fire

As there is no cancel button you will need to tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner. From here, tap More… > My Account > Deregister and wait while the device clears the previous account.

A few moments later you will be able to add your own Amazon account and password. If you don’t already have these you can sign up online in just a few moments.

Syncing Your Kindle Library

With your Kindle Fire connected to the Internet and your Amazon account added to the device, you’re ready to start buying books to download to your device (although note that thousands of out-of-copyright classic titles are also available for free such as Project Gutenberg).

On the main screen on your Kindle (accessed via the Home button in the lower-left corner) you will see a largely empty set of shelves waiting to be filled with regularly-accessed apps and of course books that you’re reading. If you already have an Amazon account and have purchased Kindle titles previously, tap the Settings icon and then Sync to prompt the WhisperSync software to download your books to the device.

If you are yet to buy a book, simply hit the Amazon icon to gain instant access to the store and start browsing!

Configuring The Kindle Fire For Multimedia & The Internet

Your e-reader tablet is capable of so much more than reading books. With a Kindle Prime account you can download videos and music to the Kindle Fire, while a browser, email client and access to the Amazon app store are all available.

However unlike the original Kindle devices, the Kindle Fire doesn’t use the eye-friendly e-ink display. As a result there is a greater chance of eye strain when reading books on the LCD display. Fortunately there is a brightness control available via Settings > Display.

setting up kindle fire

Similarly you may wish to alter the volume; this is something you can do via Settings > Volume. Extended options for both settings are available via Settings > More…

With your Kindle Fire now set up you will be ready to start downloading books, apps and games and checking your email.

Let us know if you managed to get everything working or not.  If you have just got a Kindle Fire for the first time, what do you think about it?  Love it or hate it?
