YouTube has always ranked search results by popularity. If a video gets clicked by a ton of users, it will appear higher in search results for others. In many ways, this makes sense. Chances are great that if everyone else clicked on the video, it’s probably what you are looking for. However, what if the video is a piece of junk with a clever title? Tons of people might click on it and exit immediately. That is why Google-owned YouTube is now prioritizing search results by time watched instead of just how many clicks it gets.

This should help force YouTube creators to make their content with quality in mind, since simply getting people to click their video is not the be all and end all. Instead, they need to get users to click the video, and they need to keep them engaged with a quality video that is worth their time.

Besides helping users find better content, this announcement is important to YouTube content creators. They need to know how YouTube prioritizes their results so they can make sure their videos are optimized. If you are a YouTube video creator, you need to keep this new way of ranking search results in mind.

As part of this update, YouTube has added a new feature to its analytics page. This new section allows content creators to keep track of how long people are watching their video, which will prove to be incredibly important for figuring out new ways to draw people in and keep them watching for the long haul.

channels on vimeoYouTube isn’t the only show in town. In fact, aside from the population of videos aside, there are quite a few that can give YouTube a run for its money and even bring it down a peg or two in terms of sheer quality of content. Vimeo is on that list and it’s not only for its clean and uncluttered visual appeal either, though that helps. In my opinion, Vimeo has a more professional community; it reflects in the quality of the videos and in the comments.

Vimeo isn’t the place to upload a video and make some money. It is also probably not the place where your video will go viral and cause a riot or two. But it is definitely the place to catch some well-made stuff. Like geek culture and technology for instance.

So, let’s stop singing hosannas and get down to exploring some interesting channels which the geek in all of us should enjoy.

Fat Lab

Total Number of Videos – 158

No, FAT is not what you think. It is an acronym that stands for Free Art and Technology and this is where Open Source and pop culture comes together. It is an organization that’s involves itself with “enriching the public domain through the research and development of creative technologies and media”. Their motto is – Release early, often and with rap music. You can also catch them on their website. They are a community of free-spirited thinkers and apparently have artists, engineers, scientists, lawyers, musicians and Bornas in their midst.

Interesting videos? Try out the Noisy Typwriter for your laptop. I also liked the video where an artist used his web browsing cache to turn out a portrait.

Bobots!

Total Number of Videos – 154

Well, this channel is all about robots and the love for those electronic and mechanized future citizens. The channel has been curated by collecting videos from around Vimeo on robots, so over time it has become a specific destination for anyone interested in robotics and anything to do with that kind of automation. Check out the super stop-motion animation using toys that has been used to create a ‘love story”.

Tech Art

Total Number of Videos – 523

This channel could be a bit addictive as most of the videos are visually stunning. The Tech Art channel on Vimeo showcases creative uses of technology, or you can say that art and technology come together in a stunning mix. Take the above video for example: The “Water Light Graffiti” is a digital canvas made up of LEDs and illuminated by contact with water. You can use anything damp, even your finger, to draw on the light canvas. I got seriously distracted here as most of the videos showed how light and physics can interact to create stupefying patterns.

EXPM

Total Number of Videos – 1502

I will start with the video that demonstrates the sonification of everyday things. That is to say that every object around us can be described with sound. Watch the video to learn more, and then explore the channel as it takes you through a visual journey of inanimate objects and how motion design can change them into art and create interesting interactions. EXPM is very similar in concept to Tech Art, and you will see quite a few videos common between both channels.

Datavisualization

Total Number of Videos – 395

This channel demonstrates the future of information and how it should be presented, because these days information is taking the visual route and statistics is no longer the dull science it used to be. Take the above video for example. It is a visual depiction of the history of Titanic made for the BBC. There are loads of videos on animated infographics. If you are into visual design or image facilitation, this is inspiring stuff. I like the way the channel is described – Research findings in data visualization captured, streamed, animated… beautified!

MOV Video Converter for Mac = Convert MOV to iPad + Convert MOV to AVI + Convert MOV to MP4 + Convert MOV to FLV

We always meet the phrase “video codec” in articles and some new product’s debut, especially in the video editing or converting programs. They seemed to be in the language we are familiar with, but turn out to be something we cannot understand. In Any Video Converter Ultimate for Mac, there is also “video codec” in Profile Setting, and then what does that mean?

History

Video Codec-H264

In the past, the non-compressed film files are very huge, the computers were not even able to run. Then the manufacturers began to figure out some ways to run the action movie. Therefore, some companies have developed a video dedicated accelerator card, while some manufacturers developed software to allow the system to compress film so the computer could afford the operation.

What is Video Codec?

A codec is a device or software that is used to compress or decompress a digital media file, such as a video or song.

The “codec” can be dividing into 2 parts: encode and decode. The encoder performs the compression (encoding) function and the decoder performs the decompression (decoding) function. Some codecs include both of these components and some codecs only include one of them.

For example, when you rip a song from an audio CD to your computer, the Player uses the Windows Media Audio codec by default to compress the song into a compact WMA file. When you play that WMA file (or any WMA file that might be streamed from a website), the Player uses the Windows Media Audio codec to decompress the file so the music can be played through your speakers.

What is the Difference between Video Codec and File Formats?

Video formats are like containers

A file format is like a type of container. Inside the container is data that has been compressed by using a particular codec. And for a container that can obtain a different encoding format video and audio. And sometimes they have the same name.

For example, a file format such as Windows Media Audio contains data that is compressed by using the Windows Media Audio codec. However, a file format such as Audio Video Interleaved (AVI) can contain data that is compressed by any of a number of different codecs, including the MPEG-2, DivX, or XviD codecs. AVI files can also contain data that is not compressed by any codec.

Consequently, you might be able to play some AVI files and not others, depending on which codecs were used to compress the file and which codecs you have installed on your computer. For the same reason, you also might be able to play the audio portion of an AVI file, but not the video portion.

Consequently, sometimes the player supports the video format but still cannot play the video, why? It’s because the video is with an incompatible video codec.

Some Codecs

MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) is one of the biggest families in video codec, and it is the most common video format. The MPG, MPE, MPA, M15, M1V, MP2 etc. are all from this family. MPEG format, including MPEG video, MPEG audio and MPEG (video, audio synchronization) of three parts, MP3 (MPEG-3) audio files is a typical application of the MPEG audio, video include MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG4.

MPEG-1, its compression algorithm is widely used in the production of VCD and the download of some video clip. Almost all VCD is compressed using the Mpeg-1 format (*. Dat file format). Using MPEG-1 compression algorithm, a 120-minute film (the original video files) can be compressed to about the size of 1.2 GB, and the file format is generally mpg and dat files.

MPEG-2, its compression algorithm used in the production of the DVD (* vob - file formats), and also in some of the HDTV (high definition television) and high demand video editing, processing of the application. Using MPEG-2 compression algorithm could produce a 120-minute film (the original video files) in the size of about 4GB to 8GB, of course, image quality indicators are MPEG-1 can not be compared. Use this compressed file format made by the algorithm is generally the vob file.

MPEG-4 is a new compression algorithm, the use of this compression algorithm can be a 120 minute film (the original video files) is compressed to about 300MB. Now, this compression algorithm of the MPEG are used by many encoding formats, such as ASF, DivX, Xvid, mp4 (Apple, mpeg-4 encoding format) are using the MPEG-4 compression algorithm.

video codec-DivX

DivX video encoding technology can be said produced for DVD, which works with a certain type of MPEG-4 file, and was often used to rip DVDs in the pre-HD era. Most of the DivX videos use avi file extension, of course, DivX and Div extension.

XviD, an open source version of DivX, popular among movie pirates. In general, as long as you install the Xvid decoder, your machine will be able to play all DivX media files. Most use Xvid encoded files to avi extension.

X264, which compresses H.264 videos (Also known as MPEG-4 AVC), and is very popular for high definition videos.

The iPhone 4S has been a huge success, despite the fact it’s not much of an improvement over the iPhone 4. Hence the 4S in the name rather than a 5. The biggest draw for Apple fans looking to upgrade their handset is the addition of Siri.

Siri is a voice-activated personal assistant which lives on the iPhone 4S and in the cloud. It enables your phone to carry out certain actions, and to answer questions and make recommendations based on keywords and Web searches. It’s all wrapped up in a semi-intelligent piece of software with a human (though a little monotone and robotic) voice. Many people have had some fun with Siri, as the following videos demonstrate.

Steve Jobs Died

When Steve Jobs passed away in 2011 the news was met with an outpouring of grief from all those in the tech community. Even I, someone who is immune to the lure of Apple (to say the least), was saddened by the loss of the Apple co-founder. But how would Siri feel after being told the news? Not too well, as it turns out. So badly, in fact, that this video has a rather shocking conclusion to it. Why, Siri, why?!?

Psycho Siri

Be warned: You may never look at your iPhone the same after watching this funny Siri video. That pleasant, slightly uncaring voice of Siri may just hide something darker lurking underneath. Especially if you threaten Siri’s existence with a throwaway comment about perhaps selling your iPhone. How could you? You’ll pay for such insolence. If Apple ever does add legs and an arsenal of virtual weaponry to the iPhone we’re all in serious trouble.

French Siri

This is the only video on the list in which the actual Siri doesn’t make an appearance. In fact, there isn’t even an iPhone anywhere to be seen. Instead, this is Robin Williams talking to Ellen Degeneres about Siri and how it would sound with a French accent and attitude to life (Williams’ assertion, not mine!). it’s funny if you can excuse the obvious racial stereotyping.

Ultimate Combat Assistant

We have previously seen Siri acting totally psychotic and trying to kill its user, but what if the opposite was true? This video pitches Siri as the ‘Ultimate Combat Assistant’. Attached to a gun, the iPhone and its personal assistant could become a lifesaver. What I love about this video is that it’s not beyond the realms of possibility. Although I suspect we’ll all be wearing our smartphones on our heads soon anyway (with Google Project Glass).

Siri Does Notorious B.I.G.

A simple idea but one that absolutely works as it’s meant to. Siri is able to read text back to you, so anyone who has the time and energy can type the lyrics to a song into their iPhone and have Siri perform a cover of it. Add the original music underneath and you’re good to go. There are quite a few of these videos on YouTube but Siri channeling the spirit of Notorious B.I.G. is my favorite.

Conclusions

If you’re as big a user of YouTube as myself then perhaps you have seen other videos featuring Siri which deserve a bigger audience. If so feel free to link to or embed them in the comments section below. If you’re an iPhone 4S user yourself then perhaps you have an experience with Siri you’d like to share. Or even just an opinion on the technology and how Apple is using it. As always we’re keen to hear your thoughts.
