Question: how do you improve on perfection?windows phone 8 review

Answer: you wait for someone else to have a go.

A quick look around the smartphone market reveals that Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems are top dog, while Nokia’s Symbian, RIM’s BlackBerry and Microsoft’s Windows Phone are eager for scraps thrown from the table.

In a realistic world, most people would recognise that the iPhone wields the same rows of apps as it did when released in 2007 – over five years ago – and that upgrading an Android phone to the latest release is like a trip to Las Vegas, requiring lucky wins with the network and the manufacturer to even get a sniff of an upgrade.

Since Windows Phone was first released in 2010, Microsoft has (unusually for them) attempted to bring a new paradigm to smartphones. While its successful tile-based user interface has been spun off into the main Windows operating system, and the focus on social networking has been adopted by competitors, it has on the whole remained bubbling under the surface.

But is it ready to strike like a shark, or sink like so much rotting flesh?

What’s New Since Windows Phone 7.5?

Windows Phone’s launch in 2010 was arguably too early. Updates the following year added vital copy and paste functionality but it wasn’t until the release of the Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” update in late 2011 that the platform was rounded off with a range of excellent features.

Building upon this, Windows Phone 8 is faster, with a new approach for the desktop tiles which can be adjusted to three different sizes. The speed comes thanks to the dual-core processor support (see below) which is one reason why Windows Phone 7 devices cannot receive a software upgrade; the other reason is that Windows Phone 8 shares core components with Windows 8 (see below).

Support for resolutions of 1280×720 and 1280×768, MicroSD cards (missing previously as an antipiracy device), NFC for payment and content sharing, 128-bit Bitlocker encryption, Secure Boot, and VoIP and video chat (most obviously Skype, but other platforms can be used), in app purchases and over the air updates provide users with much-needed current and relevant technology.

Meanwhile, Windows Phone 8 is jam packed with new features. While background multitasking is long overdue, the creation of Rooms for private online chats with families and friends and a Kids Corner feature to prevent tiny fingers interfering with your contacts and data are ideal and feature in the platform’s advertising campaigns. Lenses are available for third party developers to access the camera and apply skins to the interface, while Internet Explorer 10 provides surprisingly fast browsing of the web.

windows phone review

Zune has been vanquished from Windows Phone 8. Xbox Music and Xbox Video have usurped it, while the desktop application is no longer needed to sync your phone. If you have Windows 8, no additional software is required; for Windows Vista and 7 users, a (shall we say) low-fi sync tool is provided that is a little clunky, to say the least.

One of the most impressive new features is Xbox SmartGlass, which allows remote control of an Xbox 360. Although this is also available for Android and iPhone, it remains extremely useful and further underlines the importance of the Xbox brand to Windows Phone.

Similarities with the Windows 8 Desktop

Along with integration with Windows 8 and the reliance on the same kernel, file system, drivers and more, Windows Phone 8 also bears a striking resemblance to its desktop/tablet brother.

windows phone review

This should come as no surprise as both sport versions of the Metro UI tile-based and touch-friendly system first seen in Windows Phone 7.

Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 both sport live tiles, designed to display updates to the user (and arguably more useful than iPhone or Android widgets). The People hub can be found on Windows 8 as well, along with the whole practice of “pinning” tiles from favoured applications to the Start screen – another shared element.

It Looks Like It’s Alive – Is it?

While Windows Phone 7 is being left as a low-end OS for developing markets, Windows Phone 8 is carrying the torch for live tiles and ease of use Microsoft-style in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia.

Fortunately, the core user experience is maintained, which means that the fascinating live tiles and the “flowing” nature of the Start screen remain. Like its predecessor, Windows Phone 8 really is a pleasure to use. It almost feels like fun, and proves that whatever faults might arise, whatever shortcomings the platform might be recognised as having, usability is not among them.

The new mobile OS relies on a dual core mobile processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor) which is reserved for a few native tasks but really in place for third party apps and games. Windows Phone 7 was tailored to run effortlessly on the provided hardware (which is why a dual-core CPU wasn’t required previously) and the same is true of Windows Phone 8.

windows phone review

It glides!

Over the past few years, Mac OS X has been slightly revised to more closely resemble iOS, and Microsoft have taken the same approach with Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 (ironically a reversal of the situation in their earlier mobile project Windows Mobile, which attempted – with some success for several years – to replicate the desktop experience on a handheld device.

However, similarities aside, there is one clear difference. Metro/Modern/whatever-you-want-to-call-the-tile-based-interface is completely at home on Windows Phone devices, and you won’t find a more intuitive, smooth and pleasing to use – not to mention fast and efficient – implementation of any mobile phone platform than you will on a Windows Phone 8 device.

Built-In Apps

There are a whole bunch of excellent built-in apps on Windows Phone 8, from the native email and calendar tools (capable of syncing with Gmail and Google Calendar as well as Exchange) to useful additions courtesy of Nokia, whose Lumia-only apps have been upgraded for Windows Phone 8 and shared across the ecosystem. Nokia Drive is particular impressive but is just one aspect of a wider Nokia Maps tool that also includes an augmented reality tool, City Lens, for finding useful businesses in your vicinity.

Microsoft Office is built in, along with Internet Explorer 10 and Xbox Live integration. Thanks to the People hub, Facebook, Windows Live, Google, Twitter and LinkedIn exist side-by-side, updates displayed either within the hub or on the associated live tile.

review of windows phone

Along with the expected alarm and calculator tools, Windows Phone 8 also includes the Wallet, a PIN protected system for storing coupons, credit cards and memberships safe.

And if this lot isn’t enough (don’t forget the Xbox Music and Xbox Video tools for streaming entertainment or playing content saved on your phone) the Windows Phone Marketplace – now renamed to Store (in keeping with Windows 8) – provides access to around 100,000 apps and games.

The majority of Windows Phone 7 titles will run on Windows Phone 8 (see below) but most importantly the platform has been opened up considerably in comparison to its predecessor, meaning that many new types of app can be developed.

The Old “App Support” Question

As of 2012, Apple claims to have over 500,000 apps for the iPhone (with an additional 200,000 for iPad) while Android offers 600,000 across all device form factors.

By way of contrast, Windows Phone has just over 100,000. Now, I could go on about how the Windows Phone Store reached the important 50,000 apps stage faster than iPhone and Android.

But I won’t.

review of windows phone

What is most important about any of these app stores is that they offer functional, usable and compelling applications. It’s far easier to find a compelling app searching through a list of just 100,000 than it is when the list is five or six times that number. Similarly, it’s a lot harder to find apps that are – basically – crap when the app store is smaller.

But the point about the argument that Windows Phone “doesn’t have enough apps” isn’t that most of those found on the App Store and Google Play are rubbish. It’s that “of course it doesn’t have as many apps, it’s considerably younger!”

This was certainly the case with Windows Phone 7.5 – things are a little different with Windows Phone 8 as there are various developers who have not yet upgraded their apps to run on the new platform. This doesn’t seem to be a major piece of engineering – Xbox Live games have all transferred to the new platform without any trouble, as have various third party titles – but at the time of writing, TuneIn Radio is unavailable on Windows Phone 8. It isn’t alone, but its absence is notable and a little embarrassing for a new mobile OS.

Conclusion

With such good quality Windows Phone 8 devices from HTC and Nokia, it’s hard to find fault with the platform. Unlike the previous release, Windows Phone 8 finally feels like a platform that is ready for the big time – or at least to compete with Apple and Google.

windows phone 8 review

Here’s an interesting thing: I have three Facebook friends using a Windows Phone. Nothing to do with my evangelism of the platform, I’m sure, but the fact that these people use them – one an otherwise Apple-mad designer – should confirm that this isn’t a niche platform. Like Xbox 360 before it, Microsoft can and will (and it seems, have done) throw money at the platform to buy success.

For Microsoft, that means users buying into their slightly-more-open-than-Apple ecosystem, and with the discarding of the damaged Zune brand and the incorporation of the various successful Xbox brands as well as the excellent Nokia Maps suite – not to mention the improved social networking tools – Windows Phone offers an excellent way into that fenced (not walled) garden.

Some people will still be discouraged by the number of apps available, but this is easily the most pleasurable and user-friendly mobile OS. Windows Phone might not be perfect, but it’s no further way from that ideal than Android and iOS.

apple imovie vs final cut pro

If you are a Mac user and you just want to create your own home multimedia projects on your Mac, you may meet a problem: which program to select, iMovie or Final Cut Pro, as both products are video editing tools developed by Apple. Or you may have been using iMovie for editing movies but now want to move on to Final Cut Pro. In the first place, you should give a brief glance to those two programs in order to figure out the major differences between Final Cut Pro and iMovie, and then decide which one is right for you. In this article, we will review iMovie, Apple's early level video editing program, and Final Cut Pro, their high-end editing program.

Apple iMovie

Price: $14.99 from AppStore

apple imovie

iMovie is part of Apple's iLife suite of multimedia projects. It is geared towards first-time or novice video editors that want to learn the basics of video editing and create their own home movies or videos. In just a few clicks, novice video editors can cut and edit their videos into their favorite films with multiple themes and effects within iMovie.

Some basic features and extras of iMovie are listed below:

• the ability to include video titles

• performs simple transitions between clips and scenes

• exports to a few other popular video formats and devices

• adds photos and edits audio

Apple Final Cut Pro

Price: $299.99 from AppStore

apple final cut pro

Final Cut Pro is Apple's flagship video editing software and is geared toward video professionals. It offers almost every imaginable feature and option when it comes to video editing software.

Some advanced features of Final Cut Pro are:

• multicam synchronization support

• batch sequence capture

• integration with Apple's other multimedia editing software included in Final Cut Studio

• allows third-party plug-ins

Final Cut Pro vs iMovie

After a brief understanding of Final Cut Pro and iMovie, let's take a look at the major differences between those two video editing programs.

video editing
Video Editing

iMovie is a destructive video editing program that works by manipulating video files on hard drive. With iMovie, the changes will be applied directly to the video files. But Final Cut Pro is a nonlinear video editing program that does not change or manipulate the media on hard drive, which means it will make no permanent changes to the media itself.

video rendering
Video Rendering

iMovie offers a limited number of effects, layers and transitions that can be applied to a video clip. So video rendering is usually performed fairly fast. Because Final Cut Pro allows you to add many effects to the already complex data of the video file. It may not be able to provide live playback of the edited file until it has been completely exported.

color manager
Color Correction

iMovie provides simple color correction for you. But if you need to do complex color matching, matching color across different cameras, etc, you'd better choose Final Cut Pro.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a cheaper video editing software that will create simple videos in a few minutes, you should choose iMovie. But if you would like to spend a lot of time to make professional videos and movies, Final Cut Pro is best for you.

More iMovie & FCP Tips for You:

Sometimes, you may need to import your iTunes movie collection to iMovie or Final Cut Pro for editing. But you will find that the movie files downloaded from iTunes are not supported by iMovie and FCP. In this case, you are recommended to use Tune4mac iTunes to iMovie/FCP Converter for Mac, which will help you to remove the DRM protection from iTunes movies and import the converted movies into iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

There’s no disputing the fact that iPhones and iPads are very sought after devices, but the price of owning these gadgets can be very costly, especially when Apple charges over $600-$700 for 32GB and 64GB models. So many customers end up getting a 16GB iPad, but what do you do you when start running out of iPad memory space? Or another important question is, do you even need more than 16GB, especially in the era of cloud storage and syncing?ipad memory

Every user’s case is different, but if you’re running out of storage space or you want to make do with 16GB, the following are some tips for doing so. Freeing up space on your iPad is a lot easier than cleaning out your garage or storage closet. In fact, most of it can be done while lying in bed.

Checking iPad Memory Usage

To find out the current usage of your iPad or other iOS device, launch the Settings app, tap on General, and then Usage in the right column. Under Storage you will see the storage capacity of your device and how much you still have available. How much you want to keep available depends upon your individual needs.

ipad memory

You also get a breakdown of how much memory your individual installed apps are taking up in your device. Apps using 300 or more megabytes of space might be the ones you want to consider checking into to gain back more space.

As you can see on my 16GB iPad mini (which is really only about 14GB after the default iOS and apps are installed), iMovie and Photos were taking lots of space, though I still had about 6.7GB available. Since I’ve only been using the device for a week, storage is not a huge problem, but in 6 months I may have only have a gigabyte or two left to work with.

Reclaiming Storage

Remove Unused Files

When you determine which files are taking up the most memory, you can begin to figure what files, or even unused apps, need to be moved or deleted from your device. In the screenshot above, one 6 minute movie file I edited together in iMovie took up over a gigabyte of memory. When I saved a copy of that edited movie to my Camera Roll, that file ate up even more space. So first off, just getting rid of the edited file in iMovie regained me about a gigabyte of space.

After the file was edited and saved to the Camera Roll, there was no point in keeping it in iMovie. I didn’t need to do any more editing. But in case I wanted to, I could export the file to iTunes File Sharing on my Mac, where it can be saved and re-imported into my iPad for more editing. The same can be done for other supporting apps and projects.

To do this, select the file in iMovie on your iPad, tap the share button and make a copy to iTunes on your Mac.

free up ipad memory

Notice in the screenshot below that the file you’re saving in iMovie Documents is the project file (iMovieMobile), not a compressed movie file. The edited movie file can also be exported to your Camera Roll, YouTube, Facebook, etc.

free up ipad memory

Note, when you delete a file from an app in your iOS device, make sure to choose the option to not delete it from your computer, but only from the device. In File Sharing, there’s also an option to save and backup that project file outside of your iTunes Library.

free up ipad memory

Photo & Song Files

Image and song files can also eat up space very quickly if you don’t monitor them. There are a few ways to manage these. First off, if you don’t add files to your device using iTunes, you can simply back up and delete your files to an online storage site. So for example, you can copy your photos in your Camera Roll directly to your Facebook account, and then delete them.

Or you can use apps like Dropbox to upload selected photos in your Camera Roll and then delete them. Other online photo storage apps, like Flickr, can be used for the same thing.

Music and photo files on your iOS device that you import via the iTunes application on your computer will need to be managed from there. For example, to manage song files, you select your device in iTunes on your Mac and then click on the Music section. From there, selectSync Music > Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.

free up ipad storage

Using this method, you select only the song files you want to show up on your iOS device. For my iPad, I keep a “Recently Added” smart playlist that consists of songs I added in the last month. When newly imported songs and albums get added to that playlist, they will show up in my iPad. After a month, they will be removed when the automatic syncing between my Mac and my iPad takes place.

To ensure this happens, launch the Settings app on your iPad, tap on General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync and enable this feature. This also where you can manually sync your device to update content.

ipad memory

The same can be done for your iPhoto photos under the Photo section for your device. You might choose to only import to your iPad your most recent photos, or a selection of 25 of your favorite photos in iPhoto.

Since song files can take up a lot of memory space, I don’t use services like Apple’s iTunes Match which requires you to download files to your device in order to play them. Instead, I prefer streaming music from Rdio.com and  Google Play Music, which allows you to upload all the music files on your computer and then listen them anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. gMusic is an iOS app that will play your music uploaded to Google Play.

Whether you’re moving to a new Mac, or just switching up that machine that you sync your iOS or iPod device with, moving your library can be a daunting task. Fortunately, the process is relatively straight-forward once you understand a few basics of how iTunes stores your data. The method that we’ll use in this article not only copies your audio and media files over, it also retains your ratings and playlists. Follow along with this guide to move your iTunes library to another computer.

What You’ll Need

>> External hard drive that's large enough to hold your iTunes library, OR...
>> Wired or wireless network

1. Consolidate Your Library and Deauthorize iTunes

To begin, open iTunes and navigate to Preferences > Advanced, and ensure that the box labeled, “Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized” is checked and then click OK. This will ensure that your iTunes folder is properly organized so that the transition over to another computer is smooth.

In addition to consolidating your library, it is important to deauthorize iTunes on the old computer if you don't plan on accessing your iTunes-purchased media on that machine. To deauthorize the computer, navigate to Store > Deauthorize This Computer. You’ll be prompted to enter your iTunes account credentials in order to proceed with the deauthorization process.

2. Move Your iTunes Media Folder

Close iTunes on the the machine you will be transferring the library from, and ensure that it remains closed for the duration of the copy progress.

Locate the “iTunes” folder in your Music folder (~/Music). You will need to move this folder to your new Mac by using an external drive to copy the folder over, or via a wired or wireless network and the Sharing features available in OS X.

3. Change Library on New Mac

After the files have been copied to the new Mac, you will need move the "iTunes" folder to the same location on the new machine (~/Music; or in the Music folder inside of the user’s home directory).

After the copy has finished and the iTunes folder has moved over, launch iTunes while holding down the Option key on your keyboard. A dialog box will pop up asking for you to Cancel, Create a new Library, or Choose an existing iTunes library. After selecting Choose Library, navigate to and select the iTunes folder that you just copied to the Music folder on your new Mac. Once selected, click Open.

After a few seconds to a few minutes (depending on the size of your library), you will see your iTunes library. You can now import music, sync your devices, and continue on with your iTunes collection from the new machine.

After you are sure that the new machine is set up and working correctly, you can delete the iTunes folder on your old machine, and on the external drive used to move the files.

Please note: By replacing the iTunes library on the new machine, you will be overwriting any existing library files. If you have music, movies, or other media in your library, you will need to move it to another location on your drive and then import it after you have switched libraries on the new Mac.

4. Authorize and Enjoy

The last step is to authorize the new machine to play your iTunes purchases. To do this, navigate to Store > Authorize this Computer. After doing this, iTunes will be able to authenticate and play any older iTunes DRM-protected songs.

If you are looking for an Android smartphone that is truly on the top of the line, the Google Nexus 4 should be in your sights. It is almost certainly the best Android device around. The Google Nexus 4 packs in a ferocious 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a whopping 2GB of RAM and the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It features a lovely 4.7'' display, with 320 pixels per inch. With a starting price of only £239, it's just half the price of its technical rivals. And the front of the Nexus 4 is made up of a single piece of glass stretching right up to the edges.

It's great to get together with the family after Thanksgiving dinner and watch a movie.

What better way to commemorate the great American holiday than with a lineup of Thanksgiving movies? Sure, they're not all centered around the proverbial dining table, but these movies do have one thing in common: reminders that we can be thankful for lots of things -- at Thanksgiving or any time of year. From heartwarming classics to laugh-out-loud comedies to historical dramas, we have your viewing needs covered, with not a turkey in the bunch! Let's start out with a counter-cultural film that centers on a Thanksgiving dinner gone awry.

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie arrives in London with his wife Jackie to attend the opening of "Alice's Restaurant" in 1970

10. Alice's Restaurant

A Thanksgiving classic, "Alice's Restaurant" hit the big screen in 1969. This larger-than-life recreation of Arlo Guthrie's song of the same name is an entertaining romp through 1960s pop culture, complete with a firsthand account of anti-war sentiments. After Guthrie visits his friend Alice for Thanksgiving, he offers to transport her trash to the dump, where he encounters a closed landfill. A series of decisions prompts him to push the garbage into a gully. When Guthrie's caught by local authorities, a memorable court appearance is followed by a series of legal events in which the Army finds him unfit for military service.

9. Dutch

Ed O'Neill (of ABC's "Modern Family" and "Married with Children") stars in this 1991 comedy about a meat-and-potatoes construction worker's attempt to stay firmly ensconced in his girlfriend's good graces -- by retrieving her preppy son from boarding school in time for Thanksgiving. Although we fully admit the movie was indeed panned by critics at the time of its release, that hasn't stopped us from keeping it in our "10 Best." We think it has a number of redeeming qualities -- namely, a cross-country road trip filled with comedic situations. And, it's clean enough to watch with the grandparents or the junior set. How can you go wrong with that kind of set-up?

Katie Holmes on the set of "Pieces of April" in Soho, New York.

8. Pieces of April

Long before she wed Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes played the lead in "Pieces of April," a 2003 comedic drama. At the center of it all is Thanksgiving dinner, which April attempts to whip up in her cramped and less-than-clean New York City apartment for a cast of snarky, largely estranged family members. We admit that while her apartment makes us want to grab the nearest disinfectant spray, it offers an interesting backdrop for the action that ensues. Although the movie has an amateur pallor, it makes up for it with quirkiness and an emotionally satisfying conclusion -- and makes the list of our Thanksgiving movie picks.

7. The New World

Pastoral landscapes, swelling instrumentals and gripping narratives make "The New World" a compelling recount of the Thanksgiving settlers we've heard about since early childhood. At the heart of this movie is a story of love found and lost, but don't let that sway your opinion. There's plenty of action, too. Still, the dynamic between John Smith (Colin Farrell) and native princess Pocahontas -- each sent reeling by a clash between cultures -- offers a number of scene-stealing moments. In many ways, this movie is a coming of age story, not only for these pivotal characters, but for an emerging nation. Intense, and sometimes unflinchingly poignant, this depiction is worth a watch.

A commemorative postcard from the 1907 Jamestown Exhibition shows Pocahontas trying to prevent her father from having John Smith executed.

6. Pocahontas

"Pocahontas," a 1995 Disney animated film, offers a fictionalized look at Native American Pocahontas and Englishman John Smith as English settlers meet Powhatan Indians in Jamestown. It also makes a nice follow-up to the realities of "The New World," and we especially like suspending disbelief when Pocahontas visits Grandmother Willow, an advice-offering tree spirit. The movie's sure to bring back memories for the teenagers who viewed it as toddlers, and it's perfect for helping a new generation of children wile away a pleasant hour.

5. Home for the Holidays

A starlit cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Dylan McDermott and Anne Bancroft, lends acting prowess to a movie that explores the stressors of gathering with one's family during the holidays. We particularly like this biting comedy for its gently redeeming conclusion. It's a satisfying close to a storyline that finds Claudia Larson (Holly Hunter) losing a job, smooching the guy who used to be her boss and coping with a daughter who insists on spending Thanksgiving with her boyfriend. As this extended family gathers around a turkey dinner, the antics step up a notch, which is why this movie made our list. It's entertaining, and has just the right feel for our Thanksgiving movie marathon.

Pauly Shore at Sirius FM.

4. Son-in-Law

Crawl (Pauly Shore) is a big city boy who travels to the Midwest for Thanksgiving, pretending to be the fiancé of a farmer's daughter he befriended at an L.A. college. His guise as Rebecca's fiancé is designed to discourage an overly ambitious suitor in her hometown, but the strait-laced innocent (Carla Gugino) eventually falls for Crawl as he bungles his way through a series of down-home traditions. Even her suspicious family comes around in the end, as Crawl's unflagging enthusiasm wins them over. For a fun watch that doesn't require a lot of cerebral musings, this is a great pick for Thanksgiving viewing -- for the whole family.

3. The Blind Side

Sandra Bullock's Oscar-winning performance in "The Blind Side" made it one of 2009's most viewed box office movies. Bullock, who plays wealthy no-nonsense Southern mom Leigh Anne Tuohy, takes in Michael Oher -- a homeless football prodigy (Quinton Aaron) who eventually becomes a first-round NFL draft pick. The movie makes our top 10 not only because it's a compelling account of actual events, but also because we can watch it time and again -- particularly for the way it weaves together a family. Our favorite scene? When the privileged family tucks into a take-out Thanksgiving dinner in front of a blaring TV, then follows Oher to the dining room table for a conversation-filled meal that plays a pivotal role in the movie's outcome.

2. Planes, Trains and Automobiles

This 1987 film follows Neal Page (Steve Martin) and Del Griffith (John Candy) on a journey of Odysseus-like proportions. The impromptu duo's nearly failed attempt to return from a business trip in time for Thanksgiving dinner leads to a likeable stint of self-discovery. Soon, each man realizes he isn't quite the easy-going-peach-of-a-guy he assumed he was, and we figure out that what started as a comedy offers a few redemptive lessons, too, like caring for a nearly total stranger. It's enough to make us feel a little smarmy and wistful -- which is just the right mood for a family Thanksgiving.

1. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

When Peppermint Patty ("C'mon, you can do it, Chuck!") and her friends finagle Charlie Brown into serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, it's up to Woodstock and Snoopy to make the day a success. Thanks to daring dishes like buttered toast and popcorn, and a memorable struggle with an uncooperative folding chair, Snoopy lends his own brand of wordless charm to the day's events. As the gang gathers around a ping-pong table for their unique meal, the true meaning of Thanksgiving shines through. A classic for parents and grandparents alike -- and sure to become a fast favorite of younger generations -- this 1973 animated Emmy-winner tops our list for sentimental fun.

When Microsoft decided to produce their own tablet PC running the Windows RT OS, they may noticed that this would make their partners on PC market dissatisfied.  Not same as the Acer, ASUS performs more calm in the face of competition and challenge from Microsoft. So, we've got another Windows RT tablet as well as the Microsoft Surface RT - the ASUS Vivo Tab RT. This would cause one important question: Which one do you want? On one hand, there's the Microsoft Surface with Windows RT ($699 for 64GB), expresses a perfect example of what a Windows RT tablet should be. Now, an alternative has arrived, the ASUS Vivo Tab RT ($599 for 32GB). Both of the two put Windows RT into a portable touch-friendly package, but they strike a balance between tablet convenience and laptop productivity in very different ways.

The ASUS Vivo Tab RT can be used as a standalone tablet, but that doesn't make the keyboard an afterthought. The docking keyboard latches firmly to the tablet display, combining to create a clamshell device that bears some resemblance its Zenbook ultrabooks. For those who want something a bit more substantial that the flimsy Touch Cover equipped on the Surface RT, the Vivo Tab RT offers a keyboard with chiclet keys and an extra 22Wh battery. It also adds a full-size USB 2.0 port, but the Surface RT offers a full-size USB without requiring an extra dock or adapter. Below shows the main features comparison between the two Windows RT tablets:

Extending Readings:

No matter which Windows RT tablet you choose, actually it would bring an exactly different experience from that of Apple’s iPad. However, the media contents and Apps on Windows RT platform seem to be quite less than that of the Apple Store. So, sometimes it will also bring you inconvenience when you purchase movies or TV shows from iTunes Store and want to share them to your Windows RT tablets. Certainly you will be failed in directly transferring iTunes videos to Surface RT or ASUS Vivo Tab RT.
